Description: From dice to cards to consoles, a player can see the mark of fantasy

literature on nearly every gaming platform in genres ranging from role-playing to

strategy. It is difficult to fully separate the mark of fantasy from the mark of

Tolkien, who developed many of the genre’s archetypes. With its sweeping vistas,

heroic elves, and intricate world-building, Tolkien’s conception of Faerie lives on in

gaming culture.

This edited collection of essays seeks to explore the influence of Tolkien and his

legendarium on fantasy gaming, both analog and digital. Seeking a broad range of

topics and approaches, including but not limited to: Tolkien’s influence on Roleplaying

and Adventure games, the adaptation and interpretation of Tolkien’s world

and peoples into specific games, the development of Middle-earth-based games and

their commercial concerns, player-generated content and how it interfaces with

Middle-earth, gaming culture and communities within Tolkien-influenced games,

and the politics of play in Middle-earth games.

Submissions: If interested in contributing, authors should send a short bio and
