Dissertation Prize of the Association for Research in the Fantastic 2023

The Gesellschaft für Fantastikforschung e.V. (GFF) is an academic society which has set itself the task of promoting scientific research into the fantastic in art, literature and culture in German-speaking countries. Moreover, we publish an online journal (  Academic Journal) to which our members can contribute in order to further a broader scientific and cultural understanding of the fantastic. Additionally, we annually host a conference  annual meeting at different venues. The GFF is interdisciplinary and has set itself the goal of providing a forum for the discussion of the fantastic as a cultural practice and text that goes beyond specific subjects. The fantastic is understood as a generic term that includes horror and the gothic, utopias, science fiction, fantasy and speculative fiction,as well as fairy tales, fables and myths. The GFF considers all forms fantastic as equal with regard to media, modality and methodology and promotes work from a wide variety of disciplines. A special focus of the society is the promotion of young researchers.

For this reason, the GFF has been awarding a dissertation prize every two years since 2016.

The prize of €1.000 is a subsidy for printing costs . The prize can be awarded for completed dissertations that were written in German or English at a university in the German-speaking region (D/A/CH), which deal with a topic of the fantastic (in the sense of society) and whose university accpetance is within the application period (01.04.2020 to 01.03.2023). The date of the dissertation certificate applies. The submitted dissertations are evaluated by an international scientific jury.
